Peter Drucker is often (and mistakenly) given credit for the phrase "What gets measured, gets managed."

While that is in itself a flawed statement, the converse is actually more often the case: What doesn't get measured, doesn't get managed.

In the madmen era, marketing was much more difficult to measure. The adage "throw it against a wall and see what sticks" usually applied.
